Surburban Dirts
A Film I haven't seen yet is the simplest way to describe the new album "I Want Blood" by Suburban Dirts, but it's anything but simple. Some of you may recall that back in December I reviewed the bands single Eli and spoke about my surprise at them coming from right here in Hertfordshire?
Performing on the Americana/roots scene are John Wheatley- Lead vocal, acoustic guitar, harmonica, Chris Varley-Bass, David Austin-Drums, Vocals, David Moyes-Guitar, Jay Seymour-Keyboards & Joolz Addison-Violin. As I opened up the thoughtfully wrapped rustic packaging that dropped through the letterbox, I smiled, realising it was just some of the words I'd use to sum up the band.
There has without doubt been a shed load of thought gone into the making of this album, and there's a lot to say about it.........The wrapped CD slipped out of a folded card, a story in itself, but as an eager beaver I placed it to one side to read later, I wanted to hear their musical offerings.
It's certainly not what I expected from their third album, my inner head chimp was throwing out Concept album? Film Soundtrack? although individual songs, they flow effortlessly from one to another, each creating an atmosphere and the emotions of some deep dark love story, As the album journeyed along, so my thoughts automatically pictured the next scene, I'm watching a film play out before me that hasn't even been written yet?
There are plenty of stand out songs, from the intro "The Harpe Brothers Theme" to a heartfelt track four "To Dance With You Again" but it's impossible to review them separately, This album is a body, a torso with its limbs branching out, and I can't bring myself to focus on just one part when it's very much a whole.
In the bands own words "I Want Blood" tells the story of brothers Micajah "Big" Harpe & Wiley "Little" Harpe, American war mercenaries, highwaymen, river pirates, rapists, thieves who are generally accepted to be Americas first serial killers." The opening lyrics " We cut them open, carve out their guts and fill their innards with stones" immediately gives listeners a window into the mindsets of these psychotic men......or were they psychotic?
Having listened to the album I'm now very much invested in this story, and there's a part of me that thinks that they may well have been Sane but just devoid of all emotion due to something that happened in their childhood? The album and accompanying story left me wanting to grab my jacket and head off to the nearest cinema, Dagnamit! Can someone please hurry up & turn this into a film? in "I Want Blood" the Suburban Dirts have the perfect soundtrack waiting right here. Released 1st June 2018.
